Welcome to the Mountain Martial Arts and Wellness Center!
We are a family run, family centered business located in the Village of West Clay that offers – kids and adults
Martial Arts classes, Chiropractic Care, wellness programs and sports injury treatment.
Let me tell you what the Mountain Martial Arts and Wellness Center is all about.
We love what we do…because everyday we get to inspire people to BREAKTHROUGH to the next level. By breaking through limiting thoughts, beliefs and fears or by breaking through to the next level of physical well being or self-defense knowledge we help our students “Reach Their Peak Potential” in health, confidence, self mastery and self expression!”
An example would include the breaking of wood at the belt test, which is more than just the physical act but rather a symbol for our students to experience a breakthrough and find out what is possible for them when they have the courage to breakthrough fears and take bold action!
In essence, self defense training provides the opportunities to grow and become more. Everyone deserves to be safe in this world and knowing self-defense is something everyone should know. The fact that this type of exercise or training also provides so much more mental, physical and emotional growth and well being is what makes it extraordinary!
We also enjoy providing breakthroughs in health by providing care for sports injuries, chronic injuries and wellness.

It has been Michael Mountain’s dream to put his two passions together under one roof… for 20 years! Here is how it happened….
Master Michael Mountain began training martial arts over 40 years ago. In his twenties, he was the head instructor of a martial arts school in San Diego. That school, under his leadership, grew to be one of the most successful schools in San Diego.
He developed a reputation for teaching positive, exciting and rewarding classes in both the adults and the kids. His students were known for their respectful & humble attitudes, technical excellence and ability to defend them self in any real situation! As a result, he grew the children’s program to over 150 students, some of which traveled as far as 20 miles away to come to class! The adult classes also thrived…some of his classes had over 40 adult students in one class, in just 700 sq/ft!
Unlike many schools with junior teachers (largely untrained & unqualified) trying to teach, Master Mountain teaches every class..because he wants the students to improve and grow with every class.
As he continued to advance in his training and rank, he got in his head this crazy idea that in order to be a well rounded martial arts master… he also needed to be a healer. Because of his passion in martial arts, nutrition, strength and conditioning, and taking pro-active steps to ensure a life of health…becoming a Chiropractor made the most sense to him.
It was at this time that he met the woman who was to become his wife and life partner, Michele! They have shared a rewarding, supportive and loving relationship ever since.
They both believe that health is something you prioritize and honor by taking pro-active steps towards maintaining it. Preventative health is a wiser choice than waiting for the body to get into a disease state or become injured. So together they ran off to Chiropractic School. And together they started talking and dreaming of one day offering Chiropractic care and martial arts in one center.
But, it wasn’t meant to be yet…
By throwing themselves into opening a Spine and Sports injury clinic, they found that there was little time for anything else. Drs. Michele and Michael Mountain ran the premier non-surgical spine center in San Diego for 16 years! Master Mountain continued his training in Tang Soo Do Karate, Judo and Jui Jitsu… but that clinic took up 60 hours a week of his time which did not leave him time to run his own martial arts school. Unfortunately, his dream had to be placed temporarily on hold.
Together they decided they needed a change…they wanted to live in a family oriented area with strong family values, where the pace of life was slower, and where their two kids could have the same freedoms and experiences they had when they were kids. The Mountain’s wanted to be a part of a real family centered community. They found that community in Carmel! When they first arrived they got a place in the Village of West Clay and Michael knew that there never would be a more perfect place to open his dream martial arts school and wellness center!
Something to consider as it relates to martial arts. As stated above it is our passion to inspire people to “Reach Their Peak Potential” in optimum health, vitality, self mastery and self expression. As you read that you are probably considering your physical health and not asking yourself about mental and emotional health as well. The reason martial arts is such an empowering vehicle for physical activity is because of all the benefits it instills that go beyond physical fitness.
Most physical activity requires very little thought and commonly is why people get bored with exercise or going to the gym. Martial arts requires thought, focus and presence…and nobody ever gets bored.
Martial arts is the only physical activity that…
- provides an opportunity to develop and strengthen character qualities such as determination, perseverance, self-respect and discipline.
- imparts a new skill-set, self-defense. The ability to protect yourself and the ones you love.
- provides an opportunity for camaraderie – to share the challenge, fun and growth with other like minded members of the community.
- provides you an opportunity to get in great shape without focusing on it. You are not thinking about how hard you are working out because you are too busy focused on learning and having a great time!
- provides the environment for personal growth and self mastery that forges self confidence and a renewed sense of possibility for yourself.
The benefits of martial arts training for adults and children are as much mental and emotional, as they are physical. Just like a muscle must be exercised repetitively to grow stronger…so too does the muscles of focus, determination, confidence and self-respect. There is no better way to exercise your mental, emotional and physical muscles than with our martial arts classes.
We hope you choose to join us!
